A Little About “E”
If this was a speech for the Academy Awards, I might have to start by thanking the women selling churros in the 53rd and Lexington subway station in New York City that fateful Sunday in August of 2013. At the time I had been making my M&M Chocolate Chip cookies for several years, and they were a hit with everyone who tasted them. However, I never thought about selling them until I saw those women selling their churros. That day I thought to myself, “what if I sold my cookies to busy, hungry, harried New Yorkers?”
The seed was planted, but it would be ten years before I fully committed to selling my cookies. (Turns out there is a lot more to selling food to the general public than just making the product). But when my good friend Jennifer Music Quillici, owner of Mad Dog Market in East Sacramento, asked if she could sell my cookies in her market, I knew it was time. That was in January of 2023.
Next thing you know, I was taking a food handler’s course, getting my kitchen prepped to become a Cottage Food Operator, working on logos and other marketing materials, and buying a heat sealer to seal my cookie bags. (Who knew there was such a thing!?)
A couple of weeks before I was set to launch, our outdoor feral cat, Alex (aka Alex the Feral Cat), died from injuries sustained after being hit by a car. We were bereft. Still are. However, I’ve found that one of the best ways to deal with grief is to help others. So sales of my first day of cookies went to Lapcats, an organization that helps cats in the Greater Sacramento area.
My plan going forward is to offer a percentage of my proceeds to different animal organizations throughout the area. So when you buy my cookies, you can feel good knowing that some of your money is going to help our animal friends. Please check out my Giving Back page for more details.
With gratitude,
E
